A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering unveiled its brand new playgrounds on Sunday, October 3.

At 5:00 p.m. A.J. Whittenberg Elementary Principal Margaret Thomason, the school’s Program Director Ansel Sanders and Elaine Whittenberg Boyce, daughter of the school’s namesake and civil rights activist took the podium to thank the participants who made the playgrounds possible.

The two playground projects include a playground for the first and second graders featuring “A.J. the Robot” which students are able to climb through, while the K4 and K5 students have a playground modeled after Greenville-Spartanburg Airport’s (GSP) Captain Sharky, a reconditioned Navy P-3 submarine hunter plane.  Captain Sharky was on loan to the students at A. J. Whittenberg Elementary while they waited for their permanent playgrounds to come to fruition.

Donations for the playgrounds came from community leaders and area businesses. Parents, area businesses and organizations provided volunteers who worked diligently over the past five days to complete the playgrounds. “[A.J. Whittenberg] would applaud the people who have been instrumental in this school, the playground, the whole effort,” Boyce told the crowd. “It is amazing to see private business, community organizations, churches, parents, other relatives, and even people who just love children … come together.”
