Passenger traffic soars at GSP

Date: April 14, 2011
Time: 9:44 a.m.

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s March passenger traffic count soared 38.4 percent over the previous March, primarily because of the addition of Southwest Airlines service.

“There’s no question that Southwest was the leader,” said Dave Edwards, president and chief executive of GSP. “They added a little over 12,000” passengers flying out of GSP over 19 of the 31 days in March.

However, “we have seen a competitive response,” he said.

Other airlines providing GSP service lowered fares and added seats. Delta added about 1,500 seats a week and saw its traffic increase by 20 percent,” he said.

“Everyone contributed” to the increase in passengers departing and arriving at GSP, he said.

For several years prior to Southwest’s arrival on March 13, GSP estimated it was losing more than 60 percent of its potential market, particularly to Charlotte and Atlanta.

“We think this is just the start,” Edwards said of the increase in passengers flying out of GSP.
