Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Enforces traffic and parking rules.
- Investigates crimes, accidents and suspicious activity on the airport property, prepares incident, booking, and accident reports.
- Assist other law enforcement agencies, writes state summons, and attends court when required.
- Assist the general public, performs lockout, escort and protective services as directed.
- Assists with the enforcement of the Airport Security Plan and Airport Emergency Plan requirements.
- Attends training programs.
- Operate a police vehicle on patrol, non-emergency response, emergency response, or pursuit for the apprehension of suspects.
- Officers must qualify with their weapons at least once annually, or as directed by the training officer.
- Handgun qualifications require an attainment of at least an eighty percent proficiency rating.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Sergeant.
- Responsible for any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Airport Chief of Police.
Education Requirements (Evaluation Factors: Skills, Education, Experience, and Ability)
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience Requirements
- This position requires previous public contact employment. Military or law enforcement experience is desirable.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- This position requires a 10-year criminal history background check with no disqualifying convictions.
- Possess a general knowledge of Airport Rules and Regulations, Federal, State and local laws.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Have the ability to discharge a firearm without undue risk to airport employees, tenants, and the public, and comply with the department firearm standards.
- Operate a police vehicle on patrol, non-emergency response, emergency response, or pursuit for the apprehension of suspects.
- Must have the ability to operate a vehicle and utilize radio equipment at the same time.
- Officers must qualify with their weapons at least annually or as directed by the training officer. Handgun qualifications require an eighty percent (80%) proficiency rating.
- Must successfully complete an annual medical physical designed for the performance and requirements of the job.
Supervisory Responsibility
Licenses Required
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
- Must maintain a safe driving record, on and off duty. Must not have more than two chargeable accidents in the past three years, or more than two non-disqualifying traffic convictions in the past three years.
Certifications Required
- Must be certified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council or meet the minimum requirements for entry into the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
- Successfully complete the requirements of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy pre-hire testing which include psychological profile, Police Officers selection test, Polygraph Exam, physical, drug and alcohol screening, and the field training program.
Latitude/Independent Judgment/Accuracy
- Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
- Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
- Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others.
- This position requires the ability to maintain control and good public relations under all conditions.
Working Conditions
- To perform police tasks without undue effort or injury, the officer must comply with the minimal physical fitness performance requirements as outlined by the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Occupational Health office.
- Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
- May be required to perform work in adverse weather conditions, snow, ice etc.
- Mental and/or Visual Demand - Mental and visual demands are high and vary with function performed. Consistent mental attention needed to respond safely and efficiently.
- Attentiveness to work procedure will reduce potential risk of injury in work areas.
- This position requires uncommon tours of duty to include but not limited to weekends and holidays, rotating shift assignments and overtime duty.
- Will be subject to recall after normal duty hours.
- Maintain good Customer Service skills when dealing with tenants and the general public.
