Public Relations Manager

Position Summary (Primary Function)

This position will assist the VP of Communications in the development and execution of public relations initiatives that support the Airport District’s strategic business plan. These initiatives include but are not limited to media relations, social media, sponsorships, internal communications and special events.


Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)

  • Create comprehensive public relations campaigns to generate maximum earned media coverage for GSP.  All campaigns will include both traditional and social media components.
  • Manage and direct the creation of multi-level social media campaigns
  • Evaluate story ideas to package and pitch to appropriate media outlets
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests
  • Arrange media interviews for the VP of Communications and other members of the leadership team
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Customer Service/Community Relations in the development and management of an Airport District Speaker’s Bureau
  • Develop a series of standard customizable presentations for use for the Speaker’s Bureau
  • Evaluate sponsorship opportunities and make recommendations for sponsorship to the VP of Communications
  • Assign, manage and review the activities of the Public Relations Specialist
  • Assist in overseeing external agency relationships as needed to execute the production of communications materials and collaterals
  • Work closely with the Commercial Business & Marketing department to ensure the timely dissemination of information about new initiatives.
  • Monitor trends in the aviation industry and other areas that might ultimately affect the District, and then recommend ways to capitalize on that data to enhance the image of the District
  • Conceptualize fun and inventive campaigns to help support overall communications team initiatives
  • Function as secondary company spokesperson in the absence of the VP or as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Requirements (Evaluation Factors: Skills, Education, Experience, and Ability)

  • BA Degree in Communications, Public Relations or a related field or equivalent work experience

Experience Requirements

  • Eight years’ work experience in the practice of Public Relations and or communications
  • Proven  track record of designing and executing successful public relations campaigns
  • Experienced in media relations, experienced spokesperson
  • Experienced in guiding, directing and motivating subordinates
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, develop and encourage mutual trust, respect and cooperation among teams

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Email and web searches
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; capability for analytical thinking, dynamic presentation skills
  • Detail oriented and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Strategic and tactical thinker
  • Skilled in utilizing social media to accomplish business goals

Latitude/Independent Judgment/Accuracy

  • Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information
  • Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage
  • Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demand – Little physical effort required.  Some light lifting, carrying, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping and kneeling requirements necessary up to 20% of the time.  Sitting required 80% of the time.
  • Mental and or Visual Demands- Mental and visual demands vary with function performed.  Consistent mental attention needed to monitor work flow and respond efficiently.
  • Travel –Overnight/out of town travel required
  • Attentiveness to work procedures will reduce potential risk of minor injury in certain work areas
  • Exposed to normal office environment and limited industrial environment
  • Accidents unlikely outside of minor injury such as abrasions, cuts or bruises
