Public Relations Specialist II

Position Summary  (Primary Function)

As a valued member of the communications team this position will support the airport’s public relations initiatives and strategies while maintaining strong media relationships. The overall goal of this position is to aide in the enrichment of the airport’s position within the public eye.


Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Collaborates with  the Public Relations Manager to plan, develop, and execute public relations campaigns and, projects designed to create and maintain a favorable public image for the airport
  • Responsible for the review and upkeep   all airport websites to ensure content is changed and updated as necessary or as directed by the PR Manager
  • Responsible for responding to customer complaints and comments sent via email
  • Evaluates researches and responds to requests for general airport information
  • Collaborate with the P.R. Manager to create and execute multi-level social media campaigns
  • Collaborates with graphic designers or creative services to execute the production of airport literature, promotional materials and other forms of communication for publication and information
  • Identify, develop and pitch fresh story ideas to local, regional and national media
  • Maintain a contact list of local, regional and national reporters
  • Create and deliver news releases and alerts in a timely manner
  • Responsible for the coordination and scheduling of media briefings
  • Responsible for providing the media with background information prior to interviews when possible or as needed
  • Identify, develop and manage the production of GSP or aviation related Podcasts
  • Monitors and maintains supply of Airport promotional items.  Selects and negotiates contracts with suppliers of promotional items.  Researches and recommends new ideas for promotional items.
  • Track Airport District media coverage
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Relations Specialist to ensure the smooth execution of social media campaigns and airport special events
  • Provides additional public relations and community relations support as necessary.


Education Requirements (Evaluation Factors: Skills, Education, Experience, and Ability)

  • BA Degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field or equivalent work experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five years’ work experience in the field of communications and or the practice of general public relations.
  • Excellent communications skills including written, oral and presentation capabilities.
  • Graphic design skills preferred

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Email and web searches
  • Ability to multitask
  • Must be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgment and be able to work within a changing environment

  • The Public Relations Manager establishes workflow for the position
  • Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information
  • Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demand – Little physical effort required.  Some light lifting, carrying, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping and kneeling requirements necessary up to 20% of the time.  Sitting required 80% of the time.
  • Mental and or Visual Demands- Mental and visual demands vary with function performed.  Consistent mental attention needed to monitor work flow and respond efficiently.
  • Attentiveness to work procedures will reduce potential risk of minor injury in certain work areas
  • Exposed to normal office environment and limited industrial environment
  • Accidents unlikely outside of minor injury such as abrasions, cuts or bruises

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation as required by the Federal Government
